Wipe the unit with a microfiber towel to remove any dust or dirt build up. Heat and smoke both rise so positioning a detector directly above a stove will lead to numerous false alarms. Dry with a paper towel. Smoke alarms are often out of sight and out of reach.

Blow off the sensor inside the smoke alarm with a burst of compressed air to remove any loose dirt or other contaminants fouling the sensor plate. They re not that helpful though if they alarm for no apparent reason. Remove the smoke alarm from the base again if the alarm has still not reset.
